Sacramento Stonewall Demands Anne Coulter Apologize for Homophobic Attack of John Edwards

SACRAMENTO—The Stonewall Democratic Club of Greater Sacramento called on Anne Coulter to apologize for her remarks today at the Conservative Political Action Committee, and called on Vice President Cheney, as well as the Republican Candidates for President, condemn her remarks. After being introduced by former Massachusetts Governor and Republican Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney, Coulter remarked about former United States Senator and Democratic Candidate for President John Edwards, “I was going to have a few comments on the other Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards, but it turns out you have to go into rehab if you use the word ‘faggot,’ so I -- so kind of an impasse, can’t really talk about Edwards.”

Her remarks were greeted with applause by people attending the conference.

“Anne Coulter represents the worst of American politics,” said Dr. Darrick Lawson, President of the Stonewall Democratic Club. “Today, when Americans are becoming more and more accepting of gays and lesbians, for Anne Coulter to viciously and unnecessarily attack John Edwards shows how low conservatives have steeped. The fact that the audience applauded and the Republican candidates for President greeted Coulter with open arms shows the conservative movement’s real agenda is to continue slash and burn politics. It is why Americans soundly rejected the Republican Party at the polls in 2006 and will continue to do so in the future.”

Sacramento Stonewall Votes to Endorse Mayor Cabaldon for Assembly

Club Designates Pivotal Race As Priority

Sacramento, CA – On Monday, February 12th, the Stonewall Democratic Club of Greater Sacramento voted to endorse openly LGBT Mayor Christopher Cabaldon of West Sacramento for the 8th Assembly District. The club also voted to designate this race as a priority, which means that the grassroots power of the region’s largest Democratic club will now be fully behind Mayor Cabaldon’s race for the Assembly.

“With this endorsement, Stonewall intends to send a message to our friends and others that we will work very hard to elect Mayor Cabaldon to the Assembly,” stated club president, Dr. Darrick Lawson. “Mayor Cabaldon has an amazing record of achievement in West Sacramento, and he will help ensure that the LGBT Caucus remains strong for many years to come.”

If elected, Mayor Cabaldon would be the first LGBT person of color ever elected to the California legislature. More over, it would also be an historic achievement for the Filipino community, which has never had one of its own in the California Legislature. California’s Filipino community is the third largest Asian-Pacific Islander group in California.

“It is humbling to have the unequivocal support of Sacramento Stonewall,” said Mayor Cabaldon. “The fight for LGBT equality and the progressive goals of my campaign are central to the mission of this club, and I intend to win this race.”

In 2008, three of the five members of the LGBT Legislative Caucus will be forced to leave office due to term limits. In order to continue to be recognized as an official caucus, it is necessary for there to be at least three openly LGBT legislators.
