List of Bills That Affect LGBT Californians
2008 California Legislation
The Stonewall Democratic Club has taken a support
position on the following bills for the 2008 state legislative session:
AB 1757 (Hayashi) – Includes expressly in the definition of “immediate
family” a victim’s registered domestic partner, for purposes of parole hearing.
AB 2567 (Leno) – Declare May 22 as Harvey Milk State Holiday
(non-fiscal).
AB 2654 (Laird) – Amends specified sections of the California Codes to be
consistent with FEHA, Unruh Civil Rights Act, and other recently-enacted
anti-discrimination laws.
AB 2874 (Furutani) - Deletes the $150,000 limitation on actual damages
that may be assessed by the California Fair Employment and Housing Commission
against a respondent who violates the California Civil Rights Act of 2005, as an
unlawful practice.
ACR 108 (Eng) - Designates June 2008 as Hate Crimes Awareness Month.
SB 1066 (Migden) – Extend the Domestic Partnership (DP) Registry to
opposite-sex couples over the age of 18. Currently only same-sex couples &
senior opposite-sex couples may register as domestic partners.
SB 1098 (Migden) – Requires the state medical marijuana program be
applied consistently with the opinion of the Court of Appeal of California, 3rd
Appellate District, in the matter of People v. Urziceanu (2005) 132 Cal.App.4th
747, including, but not limited to, its holding that the Medical Marijuana
Program's specific itemization of the marijuana sales law indicates that the act
contemplates the formation and operation of medicinal marijuana cooperatives
that would receive reimbursement for marijuana and the services provided in
conjunction with the provision of that marijuana.
SB 1578 (Florez) - Requires the California State University, and request
the Regents of the University of California, to establish an Office of Gender
Equity (OGE), and to appoint a Title IX compliance officer who reports directly
to the OGE within each respective university system. (WATCH)
SB 1600 (Kuehl) – Includes under the definition of “school district”
charter schools for purposes of the California Comprehensive Sexual Health and
HIV/AIDS Prevention Education Act.
SB 1729 (Migden) - States legislative intent to enact legislation that
would require training for employees of senior care facilities to prepare them
for the sensitivities of serving lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender
seniors.
SJR 20 (Migden) – Memorializes Congress and the U.S. President to respect
California medical marijuana laws and enforce federal drug laws in a manner
consistent with our state medical marijuana laws.
