Stonewall Commends Mayors Christopher Cabaldon, Joe Krovoza and Other California Leaders on Their Commitment to Marriage Equality, and Urge Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson to Join Mayors for the Freedom to Marry

Sacramento--With the Friday launch of the new bipartisan group Mayors for the Freedom to Marry (www.freedomtomarry.org), the Stonewall Democratic Club of Greater Sacramento would like to congratulate West Sacramento's Christopher Cabaldon, Davis' Joe Krovoza and the other California mayors who signed on to pledge their support for gays and lesbians to marry.

"It takes real courage and conviction to stand up for what's right, and Mayor Cabaldon has never shrunk away from doing what's best for California and our country," Club Communications Chair Neil Pople said. "We need hundreds more Christopher Cabaldons in local and state government to help ensure equality for ALL citizens. We're delighted to hear Mayor Krovoza standing with us as well in this latest chapter of civil rights. Their help is going to go a long way."

Acting Club President Sam Catalano added "We'd like to encourage Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson to take this pledge to ensure the rights of ALL Sacramento citizens. This is a pivotal moment in the history of our country, and we know Mayor Johnson has the ear of the White House. His support for marriage equality could really help sway this administration's stance on and change the course of history."

Mayors for the Freedom to Marry is a broad-based and nonpartisan group of mayors who believe that all people should be able to share in the love and commitment of marriage. The group includes mayors from cities and towns--large and small--with diverse geographic, ethnic and political backgrounds.

Board Vacancies

We would like to put an open call to all Stonewall Democratic Club of Greater Sacramento members to fill 3 vacancies on our 2011/2012 Board of Directors. Our club president, Dan Roth, has moved to the Washington, DC area for work. Also leaving us is Membership Chair Eireann Flannery. We will miss them both terribly.

Our club's Secretary, Carie Edwards, is officially moving positions to become our Fundraising Chair, leaving one more position open. If you are interested in joining our group's leadership, we encourage you to email Vice President Heather Minton at vp@sacstonewall.org.

Nominations for President, Membership Chair and Secretary will continue until all positions are filled. We would like all those interested in serving Stonewall to turn in the first wave of applications before ournext Board Meeting on February 6th.

To assist our membership please complete our questionnaire. Your answers can be as long or short as you prefer. Attach pages as necessary. Your responses will be provided to the membership and are therefore public information. You must sign and date each page and return the questionnaire to Stonewall Democratic Club. It may be returned via e-mail. As a reminder, you must be a registered Democrat to receive an endorsement from Stonewall.

Stonewall Lauds Representatives Garamendi, Matsui and Thompson for Supporting Overturning the Defense of Marriage Act

SACRAMENTO--With the United States Senate Judiciary Committee set to vote to overturn portions of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which was passed by Congress in 1996 and denies over 1000 federal rights to legally married gay and lesbian couples, the Stonewall Democratic Club of Greater Sacramento commended Sacramento area and Democratic Members of Congress John Garamendi (D- Walnut Grove), Doris Matsui (D-Sacramento) and Mike Thompson (D-St. Helena) who joined 131 of their Democratic colleagues in filing a brief yesterday in support of overturning the law, saying the provision denying same-sex married couples federal rights is unconstitutional and undermines the interests of Congress.

"Once again, it is the Democratic members of Congress who are standing up for equal rights for all Americans," said Daniel Roth, President of the Stonewall Democratic Club of Greater Sacramento. "I hope that all of California's Congressional Delegation--Democrats and Republicans--will stand up and support equal rights under the law."

In their brief the members of Congress noted that according to the United States Census estimated 132,000 gay and lesbian couples are legally married in the United States, and that "DOMA harms these couples, their families, and the States that now allow them to marry."
The Democratic members of Congress were also joined by more than 70 large employers, including Starbuck's and Microsoft, who filed an amicus brief also supporting overturning the law. The employers noted that the law creates problems for employers in states where gay and lesbian couples are allowed to marry under state law, and it creates unnecessary cost and administrative complexity while forcing companies to discriminate.

"While we wait for Congress to act, real people and real companies are really getting hurt. It is time to toss out this law and grant full equality under federal law," Roth concluded.

RIP, Don't Ask Don't Tell! 1993-2011

Tuesday, September 20, 2011 marked the end of a shameful era in American policy as Don't Ask Don't Tell (DADT) was officially repealed. This landmark repeal now allows members of the United States armed forces to serve openly as LGBT Americans without fear of dishonorable discharge for who they love.

We were proud to stand tall with the Sacramento Valley Veterans at a fun-filled celebration at Headhunter's Bar & Grill, but we know the struggle for equality continues.

In the meantime, however, we can savor the moment as we gear up for the 2012 elections!

Assemblymember Ricardo Lara to Speak at Stonewall General Membership Meeting on Valentine's Day

Join us on Monday, February 14, 2011, and show some Valentine's Day love for newly-elected Assemblymember Ricardo Lara from the 50th Assembly District. Assemblymember Lara is a member of the California Legislative LGBT Caucus and will be our special guest speaker at this month's General Membership Meeting.

The meeting will take place at the Radisson Hotel on Leisure Lane in Sacramento, with social time beginning at 6:00 p.m. and the meeting kicking off at 6:30 p.m. Don't miss a chance to meet the newest member of the Legislative LGBT Caucus. He'll be discussing his campaign, what it was like running for office openly gay in this particular office, and what his experience in Sacramento has been like thus far.
